About this guide

Who's behind Visit Queen Elizabeth?

Uganda's busiest park once you take the transit traffic out of Murchison's count, written from UWA's own tariff document rather than from the operator pages that copy each other.

Who writes this

This guide is written by someone who overlanded much of Africa in his own Land Cruiser with a rooftop tent, and for whom the national parks were what stayed. The information about them online was usually missing, wrong or years old: fees from three tariff sheets ago, camps that had closed, roads described by people who had never driven them.

So he started writing it down properly. This guide runs on the park authority's own tariff documents, on climate normals rather than brochure weather, and on what the camps tell us directly, with a date on every claim.

Why bother with another park guide

Queen Elizabeth is well covered and badly covered at the same time. There are hundreds of pages about it, and most of them repeat the same handful of numbers without checking whether those numbers are still true or were ever true.

Two examples from this site. The tariff everyone quotes expired on 30 June 2026 and UWA has published nothing to replace it. And a foreign-registered 4x4 pays $150 a day to enter, nearly four times what a saloon car pays, which is a line almost nobody flags to self-drivers bringing a vehicle in from a neighbouring country.

What we do when the sources fight

We name both sides and show our working. UWA's tariff booklet contradicts itself on the price of a fishing permit, contradicts its own brochure on whether you can pay cash at the gate, and leaves the night drive out of its Queen Elizabeth summary while listing it for three other parks. We publish all of that rather than picking whichever figure reads best.

Distances get the same treatment. UWA's own page says Kampala to Mweya takes seven to eight hours; operators say five to six. We give you both and say which one comes from the authority.

Found something outdated? Tell us and we will fix it.

The other guides we run

We publish independent guides to a number of Africa's parks. Queen Elizabeth is one of our three Ugandan ones, alongside Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley. The rest cover Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana and South Africa.
