UWA publishes a park map inside its Queen Elizabeth brochure and lists five gates on its website. The brochure names a sixth, the Crater Gate at Queen's Pavilion, so the website list is not complete.

Key coordinates

Save these before you go. Mobile coverage inside the park is patchy at best, and a set of waypoints in an offline app will get you out of trouble faster than anything else.

Five sectors, hours apart

Mweya sits on a peninsula between Lake Edward and the Kazinga Channel and holds the visitor hub, the marina and the launch cruise. Kasenyi lies north of the channel on the Lake George side and is where the open plains game drives happen. Kyambura Gorge cuts into the Kichwamba escarpment to the east and holds the chimpanzees. Katwe is the salt lake village to the west. Ishasha is the whole southern arm of the park, and it is nothing like the rest of it.

The mistake people make is booking Mweya and expecting to see Ishasha in an afternoon. Routing from Mweya you drive out to Katunguru, then south on the Katunguru to Ishasha road, which is unpaved and was still on the tarmacking wish list in mid 2025 without any money behind it. The Ministry of Works calls that corridor 87 kilometres, a parliamentary list says 88, and an engineering review published by the ministry puts the Ishasha border about 90 kilometres from the Katunguru bridge. Add roughly 20 kilometres to reach Katunguru from Mweya. Routing engines give anything from 105 to 140 depending on which point in the Ishasha sector you aim at.

The number matters less than what it means. It is unpaved, the speed limit inside the park is 40 km/h, and it is worse in the wet months. Plan half a day in each direction and do not believe the two hours you will read elsewhere.

The gates, and the one that is missing from the official list

UWA's website names Katunguru, Kabatoro, Kasenyi, Ishasha and Katerera. Its own brochure adds the Crater Gate at Queen's Pavilion, by the equator markers, and mapping data shows a manned barrier there. There is also a northern Ishasha gate at Katookye that appears on neither UWA list. The waypoints above are taken from mapping data checked in September 2026, not from operator pages.

Official hours are the only thing UWA states plainly, and it states them for the park rather than per gate: gates open between 07:00 and 19:00, in the park rules section of the tariff document.

The public road through the middle

The Mbarara to Kasese highway runs straight through the park and crosses the Kazinga Channel at the Katunguru bridge. Uganda does not signpost or officially publish route numbers for its national roads, so if you see this described as the A5 that comes from mapping data rather than from the roads authority.

On whether you may drive it without paying park entry, there is no official statement either way. What there is, is a parliamentary exchange of 2 October 2024 in which MPs argued it was unfair to charge transit through Murchison Falls when travellers in western Uganda cross Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth free of charge. The State Minister for Wildlife did not dispute that; he defended Murchison as a special case because its road was built as a tourism road. That is strong indirect evidence rather than a published rule, and it is the best that exists.

One thing to plan around: the 60 metre Katunguru bridge is due to be replaced by a new 225 metre structure. An independent review commissioned for the project and published by the Ministry of Works in April 2026 found the existing bridge had eroded foundations and reduced clearance, and judged it not resilient to rising lake levels in extreme rainfall. Expect works on the only road crossing of the channel.
