Mweya Hostel
Hostel with rooms and cottages · Mweya peninsula · Historically run under the Uganda Wildlife Authority
A drawing, because nobody has sent us a photograph of Mweya Hostel yet. Send five and this page changes the same week.
The old institute buildings stand on the Mweya peninsula inside the park boundary, a short walk from the launch jetty and the park offices. Ownership is the catch. The UWA tariff booklet prices a dormitory and campsites for this park while UWA's own FAQ says the authority runs no accommodation, which points to concession holders now holding the keys. Ring the reservations line before counting on a bed here, and expect park entry on top of whatever you are quoted.
Pros and cons
Pros
- The cheapest bed on the Mweya peninsula, inside the park
- A short walk to the launch cruise jetty and offices
- Self-contained rooms plus twins and singles, several price points
- Dormitory bunks cost as little as UGX 25,000 a night
Cons
- No website; booking means calling +256 414 355000 direct
- UWA's own FAQ says it runs no accommodation here at all
- The published UWA tariff expired 30 June 2026, no successor seen
- Twin rooms share facilities, with no en-suite option confirmed
What the park charges on top
The rate above buys you a bed. Queen Elizabeth National Park charges its own entry fee for every day you are inside. Here is what that adds up to.
- Park entryCharged per 24 hours rather than per night.
- $40per person, per day
- VehicleA Ugandan-registered 4x4, the usual hire car, at UGX 30,000; a foreign-registered 4x4 pays $150.
- $8per vehicle, per day
Three nights means three days inside, so two adults sharing one vehicle pay $264 in park fees before anyone pays for a bed.
Entry is sold in 24-hour blocks that begin when you pass the gate, so a trip that starts at midday and ends at 16:00 two days later is charged as three days, not two.
The full fee schedule for Queen Elizabeth National ParkRates at Mweya Hostel
On request. There is no own website and no published rate for the hostel itself. The only accommodation figure UWA publishes for this park is a dormitory bed at UGX 25,000 for adults, UGX 10,000 for children and UGX 5,000 for students within a group, excluding local levy, from the tariff that ran July 2024 to June 2026 and expired on 30 June 2026. Against that, UWA's own FAQ states that the authority operates no accommodation facilities because it falls outside its mandate, so ring +256 414 355000 and ask who is actually taking the booking. The $20 to $40 figures that circulate on blogs trace back to no official publication and are left out here.
What the rate covers is not confirmed. We do not know yet whether meals, drinks and activities are included, so read this as the bed only.
Every figure on this page is in US dollars.
Indicative 2026 rates, read in September 2026 from each property's own website, rate card or factsheet. Twenty-three of the forty-two publish a rack rate of their own. The other nineteen say on request, and no agent or tour operator figure has been used to fill a gap. Watch the basis, because it decides whether two numbers can be compared at all: some quote per person per night sharing, others per room, per tent or per cottage, and meals sit inside some rates and outside others. Park entry is extra almost everywhere at $40 per foreign non-resident adult per 24 hours, plus the vehicle, and the Kazinga Channel cruise is $30 on top.
Something this page does not answer?
This camp does not publish a rate, so the only way to a real number is to ask them or us.
This one is run by the park authority or its concessionaire, so the booking goes to them and not through anyone else. We are happy to help you work out whether it fits your route, which month suits it and what else sits near it.
Nothing on this site sits behind the form. Every figure we have is already on the page.
Questions about Mweya Hostel
Who runs Mweya Hostel?
That is genuinely unsettled. The Uganda Wildlife Authority's own tariff booklet prices a dormitory and campsites for this park, yet UWA's own FAQ states the authority operates no accommodation because it falls outside its mandate. That points to a concession holder now running the hostel day to day. Call +256 414 355000 and ask who is actually taking your booking before you rely on a bed here.
How much does Mweya Hostel cost?
There is no current rate published for the hostel itself. The only figure on record is UWA's dormitory bed at UGX 25,000 for adults, UGX 10,000 for children and UGX 5,000 for students in a group, excluding local levy, from a tariff that expired on 30 June 2026 with no replacement seen. Treat any other figure online as unconfirmed and ask for a written quote before you travel.
Is Mweya Hostel good for families?
We found no child policy published for the hostel itself, so ask when you call. UWA's wider park brochure describes four and five bedroom self-catering bungalows and cottages on Mweya, which would suit a family better than a shared twin, but whether those are the same units as the hostel is never stated, so confirm the room type before you book.
Can you self-drive to Mweya Hostel?
Yes. The hostel sits on the Mweya peninsula inside the park, reachable by road once you have paid at a gate, and Mweya also has its own airstrip for guests flying in. There is no owner website to give a self-drive route or a minimum stay, so confirm both when you call to book.
