Katwe Tourism Destination Centre (KATDC)
Community centre with beds · Katwe enclave, by the salt lake · A community organisation of local guides, founded around 2015
A drawing, because nobody has sent us a photograph of Katwe Tourism Destination Centre (KATDC) yet. Send five and this page changes the same week.
KATDC works out of the Katwe enclave beside the salt lake, where salt is still cut from the crater pan by hand, and it makes no claim about which side of the boundary it occupies. It is a guides' co-operative first and a place to sleep second, with the salt lake tour and the village walks as the reason to come. The website has carried placeholder text since 2016, so the working channel is the telephone. Note the name too: the organisation calls itself a Destination Centre, not an Information Centre.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Guides from Katwe itself run the salt lake tour
- Activity prices are published clearly, from $10 to $160
- The village tour and salt lake tour keep money in the community
Cons
- No bed price or confirmed banda exists; it is arranged on booking
- The website has not been updated since March 2016
- No capacity or room confirmation from the owner at all
- Park entry and vehicle costs are excluded from every activity
What the park charges on top
The rate above buys you a bed. Queen Elizabeth National Park charges its own entry fee for every day you are inside. Here is what that adds up to.
- Park entryCharged per 24 hours rather than per night.
- $40per person, per day
- VehicleA Ugandan-registered 4x4, the usual hire car, at UGX 30,000; a foreign-registered 4x4 pays $150.
- $8per vehicle, per day
Three nights means three days inside, so two adults sharing one vehicle pay $264 in park fees before anyone pays for a bed.
Entry is sold in 24-hour blocks that begin when you pass the gate, so a trip that starts at midday and ends at 16:00 two days later is charged as three days, not two.
The full fee schedule for Queen Elizabeth National ParkRates at Katwe Tourism Destination Centre (KATDC)
On request. The centre states plainly that accommodation is arranged on booking and priced per customer. Its activities are published per person for international guests: the salt lake tour $10, birding $10, a nature walk $10, a village tour $10, a boat trip $15, a game drive $160 including the vehicle and research at $30 a day. Park entry and vehicle costs are excluded, and the centre says so. There is no owner confirmation that bandas exist, since accommodation appears only as a line in the list of services. Telephone 0700 644727, 0755 944261 or 0706 755920.
What the rate covers is not confirmed. We do not know yet whether meals, drinks and activities are included, so read this as the bed only.
Every figure on this page is in US dollars.
Indicative 2026 rates, read in September 2026 from each property's own website, rate card or factsheet. Twenty-three of the forty-two publish a rack rate of their own. The other nineteen say on request, and no agent or tour operator figure has been used to fill a gap. Watch the basis, because it decides whether two numbers can be compared at all: some quote per person per night sharing, others per room, per tent or per cottage, and meals sit inside some rates and outside others. Park entry is extra almost everywhere at $40 per foreign non-resident adult per 24 hours, plus the vehicle, and the Kazinga Channel cruise is $30 on top.
Questions about Katwe Tourism Destination Centre (KATDC)
Can you stay overnight at the Katwe Tourism Destination Centre?
Possibly, but nothing is confirmed. The centre states plainly that accommodation is arranged on booking and priced per customer, with no owner confirmation that bandas or rooms actually exist, since accommodation appears only as a line in its list of services. Call 0700 644727, 0755 944261 or 0706 755920 and ask directly what is on offer before you plan a night there.
What does it cost to visit the Katwe Tourism Destination Centre?
Activities are priced per person for international guests: the salt lake tour, birding, a nature walk and a village tour each cost $10, a boat trip costs $15, and a game drive costs $160 including the vehicle. Park entry and vehicle costs are excluded, and the centre says so. Accommodation has no published price at all.
Is the Katwe Tourism Destination Centre still active?
The guides' co-operative itself is active by phone, but its website has carried placeholder and outdated text since March 2016 and should not be trusted for current information. Call one of its three listed numbers, 0700 644727, 0755 944261 or 0706 755920, to book the salt lake tour or ask about a stay.
